Edouard Earliest 5th Named Storm on Record

(NASA) - EOSDIS Worldview

Although Tropical Storm Edouard is no longer a tropical storm and wasn't all that strong, it did break a record.

Edouard marked the earliest fifth named storm on record in the North Atlantic Ocean, exceeding the record of Hurricane Emily which became a tropical storm on July 11, 2005.

A large burst of convection allowed the system to tighten its circulation and permitted the National Hurricane Center to upgrade the system to Tropical Storm Edouard at 3:00 UTC on July 6.

Other named storms this year were Arthur, Bertha, Cristobal, and Dolly. The next named storm will be Fay.
