NHC says subtropical storm formed back in January

Back in January a storm formed off the northeastern coast of the United States.

Through a re-assessment, the National Hurricane Center has determined that the area of low pressure should be designated as a subtropical storm.

A subtropical cyclone is a weather system that has some characteristics of both a tropical and an extratropical cyclone.

This subtropical storm is being numbered the first cyclone of 2023 in the Atlantic basin. If the next storm system begins as a tropical depression, it would be given the designation Tropical Depression Two, if it becomes a tropical storm, it would be given the name Arlene.
