St. John’s Declares Climate Emergency

At Monday night's regular council meeting, the City of St. John's declared a climate emergency.

The vote passed unanimously.

The declaration means that St. John's will now put a focus on fighting climate change.

The City will complete an assessment of climate risks and vulnerabilities and increase local adaptation and resilience. They will also develop specific greenhouse gas emissions reduction targets for 2030 and 2050 and, ultimately, actions and strategies for the City of St. John’s to achieve its targets.

There will also be a development of reporting systems for energy utilization, greenhouse gas emissions, and weather impacts to inform policy and budgeting choices and identify funding sources and collaboration opportunities to support the implementation of the plan.
