Wintry mix of precipitation to hit Atlantic Canada

A low will push across Atlantic Canada beginning on Friday. The low will bring snow, rain, and freezing rain to the area.

New Brunswick

Snow will begin over western sections tonight and will spread across all areas by Friday morning. Southeastern areas will change to rain at first with all areas, except northern and western sections, changing to rain by Friday evening. Northern New Brunswick could see 20 to 40 cm of snow, central New Brunswick may receive 15 to 25 cm of snow.

Northern and western sections will see freezing rain. Freezing rain will fall for four to six hours. Central New Brunswick could see freezing rain for 12 hours.

On Saturday freezing rain and snow are expected for eastern sections before clearing on Sunday.

Prince Edward Island

Snow begins on Friday morning across central and western sections of the Island. Snow will change to rain in the afternoon and will continue through the day Saturday.

Snowfall with total amounts of 15 to 20 cm is expected across central and western sections. 20 to 30 mm of rain could fall across eastern areas.

Nova Scotia

Rain is expected to begin across the province on Friday morning and will linger through the weekend. The rain could mix with freezing rain at times over northern areas. Rainfall amounts of 30 to 60 mm are expected. Some areas could see up to 100 mm of rain.

Winds will also be strong with gusts to 130 km/h possible in the Inverness County - Mabou and north region.

Newfoundland

Snow will begin on Friday night for the Great Northern Peninsula. From Friday evening until Saturday evening 20 to 30 cm of snow is expected.

Snow is expected for central and western Newfoundland on Friday night. The snow will change to rain on Saturday with freezing rain. On Friday night snowfall amounts of 10 to 15 cm are expected. Heavy rain will fall on Saturday with 40 to 70 mm anticipated. Precipitation will change to freezing rain on Saturday night with 15 to 30 mm possible. The freezing rain could cause extended power outages and dangerous driving conditions. Significant snowmelt is also anticipated.

Rain is expected for areas east of Gander this weekend. Amounts of 40 to 60 mm are possible leading to snowmelt and the possibility of flooding.

Labrador

In southeastern Labrador, snowfall amounts of 20 to 30 cm are expected from Friday evening to Saturday night.

Travel Impacts

Marine Atlantic is anticipating that all crossings on Friday will be cancelled and the crossings for Saturday morning will also be cancelled.

Wind conditions on January 13, may result in restrictions of traffic on the Confederation Bridge commencing from approximately 8:00 am until approximately 2:00 pm.
