1,200 dead after several large earthquakes in Turkey


Over 1,200 people are dead in Turkey and Syria after a series of large earthquakes struck Turkey. Rescue efforts continue.


The earthquakes caused several buildings to collapse including a hospital. In total 2,818 buildings have collapsed.


The first earthquake measured 7.8 and there were aftershocks including a 6.7 magnitude earthquake and a 7.5 magnitude earthquake.


Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan says this is the worst disaster since 1939.


The original earthquake struck 26 km east of Nurdağı, Turkey at a depth of 17.9 km.
