5 Dead After New Zealand Volcano Erupts

Five people are dead, many others are injured and several remain missing after a volcano erupted in New Zealand.


At the time of the eruption, there were several tourists in the area.


The cruise ship Ovation of the Seas was touring the volcano.


It is reported that there were fewer than 50 people on the island when the eruption happened.


Whakaari / White Island is an active andesite stratovolcano, situated 48 km from the east coast of the North Island of New Zealand, in the Bay of Plenty. It is New Zealand's most active cone volcano.
