El Niño expected to continue through the Northern Hemisphere this winter

The U.S. Climate Prediction Center anticipated that El Niño will continue through the Northern Hemisphere this winter, with a greater than 95 percent chance through December 2023 to February 2024.

An El Niño Advisory remains in place.

Last month, El Niño continued as indicated by above-average sea surface temperatures across the equatorial Pacific Ocean.

Area-averaged subsurface temperature anomalies decreased compared to June, but remained positive, in association with anomalous warmth across the equatorial Pacific Ocean.

Forecasters are more confident in a "strong" El Niño event. While local impacts may not be evident, El Niño is anticipated to continue through the Northern Hemisphere this winter.
