Cyclone Freddy is currently a tropical cyclone over Madagascar. Five people were killed as a result of the storm.

The storm was not as powerful as originally anticipated. It struck the island with winds near 130 km/h late on Tuesday.

The storm impacted 16,700 people and about 4,500 homes were flooded or damaged.

Météo-France said that rainfall accumulations of 200 mm were possible for the southern regions of Madagascar.

The storm weakened over Madagascar but could regain strength as it hits Mozambique later this week.

Ahead of the storm, the government of Mozambique has declared a red alert.
