Heavy rain and damaging winds from Ontario thunderstorms


Severe thunderstorms rolled across portions of southwestern Ontario on Wednesday.


The thunderstorms brought heavy rain and strong damaging winds.


After a damage survey in Elora, Environment Canada in collaboration with the Northern Tornadoes Project suggests an EF0 downburst with winds near 130 km/h.


There were also reports of heavy rain:

  • Goderich: 62.6 mm

  • Collingwood: 50.4 mm

  • Wiarton: 42.8 mm

  • Sarnia: 39.9 mm

  • Mount Forest: 37.1 mm

  • Egbert: 29.9 mm

  • Barrie: 26.4 mm

  • Kitchener: 11.0 mm


Flooding due to heavy rain was reported in Listowel and Wingham.


There was extensive tree damage, power lines down and utility outages in Fergus, Elora, Salem, Elmira, and Bornholm.
