A thunderstorm in Poland and Slovakia on Thursday killed five people and injured over 100.

Lightning struck across the Tatra Mountains which is a popular hiking area.

The day began with clear weather according to witnesses and the thunderstorm that developed was sudden.

Some of the injured were brought by helicopter to a hospital.

The Tatra Mountains, part of the Carpathian mountain chain in eastern Europe, create a natural border between Slovakia and Poland.

Both Slovak and Polish sides are protected as national parkland and are popular destinations for winter and summer sports.
