Strong earthquake recorded off off the coast of Japan


There was a magnitude 6.2 earthquake off the coast of Japan Friday evening.


The earthquake occurred at 7:03 pm local time at a depth of 44 km. It was centred 11.5 km south-southeast of Asahi, Japan, off the east Coast of Chiba Prefecture.


Japan's Meteorological Agency did not issue any tsunami alerts.


There were no immediate reports of any damage occurring on land.


Japan is accustomed to earthquakes. The country is located along the Pacific Ring of Fire, a region around much of the rim of the Pacific Ocean where many volcanic eruptions and earthquakes occur.
