Thunder Snow - What's Up

Updated: May 15, 2023

What is it?

Happens when thunder and lightning occur during a snowstorm.

If you see this then it's safe to say that 15 cm of snow is falling somewhere.

A 2006 study showed 86 percent of thunder snow events were associated with storms dumping over 15 cm of snow in 24 hours - enough to cause trouble.

Thunder and lightning is a predictor of heavy snow. But heavy snow is not a predictor of thundersnow. Studies are continuing to find out why.

Scientists believe that thunder snow is caused by the same things as summer thunderstorms. But some scientists believe no one knows what causes them. However, they are cool when you can see them.
