10 people dead after Cyclone Batsirai hits Madagascar


Cyclone Batsirai shortly before landfall in Madagascar.

Authorities have confirmed that ten people have died after Cyclone Batsirai hit southeastern Madagascar on Saturday.


The storm triggered floods, brought down buildings and cut power. Many areas have been cut off due to flooding.


Wind gusts of 165 km/h were forecasted.


The Town of Nosy Varika was strongly damaged. An official described the damage as if they were "bombed", with 95% of buildings being reported as destroyed.


Roofs were torn off in the city of Fianarantsoa.


The country was hit by Cyclone Ana just two weeks ago.
