A powerful earthquake has struck southwestern China.

The magnitude 7.0 earthquake occurred at 10:33 p.m. local time and was centred 183.4 km east-northeast of Nagqu, China. It was at a depth of 10 kilometres.

Hundreds of homes collapsed, and at least 16 people have been killed.

The earthquake was also felt in India and Myanmar (Burma).

Western China is one of the most geologically active parts of the world, particularly when it comes to earthquakes.
