250,000 have been forced to flee out-of-control wildfires in both France and Spain. The fires have been raging for days, fuelled by strong winds and hot temperatures.

Strong winds are pushing flames toward the French city of Bordeaux. The city in southwestern France, famous for its wine-growing, has a population of 267,991. Several towns west of Bordeaux have already been evacuated.

The French government has mobilized the military to assist firefighting efforts.

French President Emmanuel Macron said, “All civilian and military resources have been mobilized: Civil Protection aircraft, Canadair and Dash aircraft, water-bombing helicopters, and reinforcements from across France. One example illustrates the adaptability of our armed forces: the A400M has been deployed to support the operations.”

Conditions are also perilous in Spain, where a State of Emergency has been declared.

Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez said, "Our priority is safeguarding lives, defending population centers, and combating the flames. The entire State, all Administrations, are coordinating all resources for an effective response to the fires and for the reception of evacuated and confined people. Today we are in the fight and in the extinguishing, but the Government of Spain will also be in the reconstruction and recovery of the affected areas."

The fire has claimed the life af at least one person. A man was found dead in his car in the province of Valencia.
