Alberta has signed a deal with the federal government that will see a reduction in oilsands environmental monitoring.

The Canadian Press reported that funding was cut by at least 25 percent, allocating no more than $44 million this year. Last year, $58 million was allocated.

At the same time, no fieldwork is to be done in the Athabasca River.

There will also be no field studies on wetlands, fish or insects.
