It was at a depth of 17.0 km depth.
The earthquake triggered landslides, damaged homes, and businesses, and fires have broken out and emergency services are responding to calls across the state.
Dozens of aftershocks have been reported.
The earthquake was felt as far away as Las Vegas.
A magnitude 6.4 earthquake struck 12 kilometers southwest of Searles Valley, California earlier this week.
