Atlantic hurricane season reaches its peak

The Atlantic hurricane season is reaching its climatological peak, with September typically the most active month for tropical activity.

The official Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1 through November 30, but tropical cyclone activity generally increases through August and reaches its peak around September 10.

The period from mid-August through mid-October is typically the busiest part of the season.

While Newfoundland and Labrador is rarely directly affected by hurricanes, tropical systems can move northward and transition into post-tropical storms before reaching the province. These systems can still bring heavy rainfall, strong winds and hazardous marine conditions.

Residents should continue to monitor forecasts as the Atlantic hurricane season continues through the end of November.
