Auroral activity expected to increase across parts of Canada

Magnetic activity is expected to remain unsettled across much of northern Canada over the next 24 hours, according to Natural Resources Canada.

The agency's latest magnetic activity forecast shows that unsettled to active intervals are expected in the auroral zone through the next 24 hours.

The auroral zone experienced unsettled conditions during the six hours before the forecast was issued. Natural Resources Canada expects those conditions to continue during the next six hours.

Over the next 24 hours, the forecast calls for:

• Auroral zone: Unsettled with active intervals.

• Polar zone: Unsettled with active intervals.

• Sub-auroral zone: Quiet.
  

The forecast map shows the auroral zone covering much of northern Canada, including Yukon, the Northwest Territories, Nunavut and parts of northern British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec and Labrador.

Periods of increased geomagnetic activity can create favourable conditions for northern lights displays in areas beneath or near the auroral zone. Visibility will depend on darkness, cloud cover, local light pollution and the timing and strength of the activity.
