Blizzard Hammers Eastern Newfoundland


The storm that we were predicting would hit most of Newfoundland is doing just that.


The snow is well underway on the Avalon Peninsula, Burin Peninsula and parts of Central.


In the heaviest snow, which will fall over the Avalon, up to 80 centimetres are possible.


Snowfall Forecast:

There will also be very strong winds with gusts to 130 km/h expected on the Avalon.

There are several closures and travel problems.


Schools on the Avalon and most of central Newfoundland are closed all day.


Memorial University in St. John's, including the Marine Institute and Signal Hill campuses, including the Childcare Centre is closed all day.


CNA Grand Falls- Windsor, Gander, Clarenville, Carbonear, Seal Cove, Ridge Road, PPD (Child Care Centre, ATC Centre & Topsail Rd offices), Bonavista, Burin & Placentia campuses are closed all day.


Roads Report:

  • Avalon: Snow covered to mostly snow-covered. Slippery sections. Reduced visibility and blowing snow.

  • South Coast: Snow covered to mostly snow-covered. Slippery sections.

  • Central: Bare sections. Some snow covered sections. Snow-covered to mostly snow-covered. Slippery sections.

  • Western: Snow covered to mostly snow-covered. Slippery sections.

  • Northern Peninsula: Snow covered to mostly snow-covered. Slippery sections.

  • Labrador: Partly covered.

All flights at St John's International Airport and Gander International Airport have been cancelled. Most flights are cancelled at Deer Lake Regional Airport.


MetroBus is not running today.


Marine Atlantic crossings that were scheduled for this morning are cancelled and are now scheduled to depart 11:45 pm this evening. That crossing is also expected to be cancelled. The MV Legionnaire is out of service due to poor weather conditions.
