Blizzard shuts down the Avalon Peninsula

Writer: Kyle Sooley-BrookingsKyle Sooley-Brookings

Travel on the Avalon Peninsula remains a mess this morning as residents dig out from a blizzard.

Holyrood RCMP is advising motorists that the eastbound lanes of the Trans-Canada Highway near Butter Pot Park are currently blocked by a tractor trailer. Travel is not recommended anywhere on the Avalon Peninsula.

Metrobus is not operating this morning and Memorial's St. John's, Marine Institute and Signal Hill campuses, including the Childcare Centre, are closed for the morning and most schools are closed all day.

There are several flight delays and the Bell Island and Fogo ferries are tied up riding out the storm.

The blizzard warnings have ended but gusty winds will continue throughout the day.
