Canadian Armed Forces Assisting Evacuation of Ontario First Nation Threatened by Wildfire

The Canadian Armed Forces has deployed aircraft and personnel to assist with the evacuation of Eabametoong First Nation, Ontario, as a rapidly advancing wildfire threatens the community.

The registered population of Eabametoong First Nation is 2,895.

The federal government requested military assistance on July 17 after concerns grew over the wildfire's proximity to the remote northern Ontario community.

In response to the request, the CAF approved the deployment of airlift resources along with liaison and coordination personnel to support evacuation efforts. Military assistance was scheduled to begin on July 18 in coordination with Public Safety Canada and federal, provincial and Indigenous partners.

Four Royal Canadian Air Force CC-130 Hercules aircraft have been assigned to the operation. The aircraft are being used to transport residents from the affected area to safer locations as evacuation efforts continue.

The Hercules aircraft are particularly suited to emergency operations in Northern Ontario because of their ability to operate in remote and challenging environments where transportation options can be limited.

The Canadian Armed Forces said it is working closely with emergency management partners to ensure the safe evacuation of community members and to provide support as needed.

Officials say protecting the safety and well-being of residents remains the top priority as wildfire activity continues to threaten the region.
