December astronomy highlights


The Moon will serve as a reference point this month to see several planets. The Moon will sit below Jupiter on December 1st, above Mars on December 7th, and below Saturn on December 26th.


The Geminids meteor shower will begin on December 14th and end on December 15th. The meteors from this shower are slow-moving.


By the end of this month, Venus will return as the evening star in the southwestern sky.

  • First Quarter December 29
