Earthquake in Tonga prompts tsunami warning

A 7.0 magnitude earthquake occurred 90.3 km southeast of Pangai, Tonga.


The earthquake happened at 1:18 a.m. local time and was at a depth of 10 km.


The NWS Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Honolulu, Hawaii said tsunami waves reaching 0.1 to one metres above tide level were possible for some coasts of Niue and Tonga. The alert was later cancelled.
