Eastern North Pacific hurricane season officially kicks off today

The Eastern North Pacific hurricane season officially kicks off today.

The National Hurricane Center says, "the eastern Pacific basin extends from Mexico and Central America westward to 140°W. Based on a 30-year climate period from 1991 to 2020, an average eastern Pacific hurricane season has 15 named storms, 8 hurricanes, and 4 major hurricanes."

The storm names for 2022 are Agatha, Blas, Celia, Darby, Estelle, Frank, Georgette, Howard, Ivette, Javier, Kay, Lester, Madeline, Newton, Orlene, Paine, Roslyn, Seymour, Tina, Virgil, Winifred, Xavier, Yolanda, and Zeke.

The list of names is re-cycled every six years and the 2022 list will be used again in 2028 unless a storm is deadly, at which point a name could be retired.

The season runs through November 30th. The Atlantic hurricane season runs from June 1st through November 30th.
