Fiona and Ian hurricane names retired by WMO

Both Fiona and Ian have been retired as hurricane names by the World Meteorological Organization due to the death and destruction from both storms in 2022.

The names Farrah and Idris will be added to the list as replacements. The next time that list is used will be in 2028.

Hurricane Fiona was the costliest and most intense tropical or post-tropical cyclone to hit Canada on record. It caused catastrophic damage to western and southern Newfoundland and Nova Scotia, its impacts were also felt in Prince Edward Island and New Brunswick.

Hurricane Ian was the third-costliest weather disaster on record, and the deadliest hurricane to strike the state of Florida since the 1935 Labor Day hurricane.
