An emergency has been declared in the Galápagos Islands after 2,200 litres of diesel spilled into the ocean.

A crane overturned onto a barge which itself then overturned. There were no reports of any injuries.

There is a cleanup effort underway to try and contain the spill.

The Galápagos Islands hosts a diversity of plant and animal species, many found nowhere else on Earth.

Lenin Moreno, the president of Ecuador, said that the situation is under control.
