Halloween Storm Lashes Eastern Canada

Halloween, Friday, and Saturday will be scary for sure but it won't be ghosts and goblins we have to worry about, it will be the weather.

For Southern Ontario wind gusts to near 90 km/h are expected around eastern Lake Erie and Lake Ontario overnight. Rainfall amounts of 30 to 50 mm are expected, except Eastern Ontario where 60 mm is possible. Strong wind will continue on Friday.

Meanwhile across Northern Ontario, snow squalls are possible along the north shore of Lake Superior. Local amounts may reach 15 cm on Friday. Also, the snow will end across Northeastern Ontario, with total accumulations of 15 to 30 cm possible.

For areas along the St. Lawrence River, heavy rain is expected with amounts ranging from 50 to 80 millimeters. This will likely result in localized flooding. Farther north, a total of 15 to 25 centimeters of snow is expected today and Friday.

Heavy rain is expected across most of New Brunswick. Up to 70 mm is expected across southeastern and northwest sections with about 40 mm elsewhere. The rain will begin today, and continue through tonight, and Friday morning. Elsewhere across the Maritimes, only minimal rainfall amounts are expected.

There are several warnings, watches, and special weather statements in effect across the western part of Newfoundland and all of Labrador.

Across the west coast of Newfoundland, strong winds gusting to 100 km/h will develop tonight and linger through Friday. There will also be heavy rain with 50 to 75 mm expected for the west coast and Northern Peninsula of Newfoundland.

In Labrador, rain won't be an issue but snow will... For Eagle River to Labrador City snowfall amounts of 15 to 30 cm are possible. Heavy rain is expected in Red Bay to L'Anse-au-Clair with 40 to 60 mm likely. There will also be wind gusts to 70 km/h. The precipitation moves in tonight and will linger through Friday in Labrador.

Marine Atlantic is also impacted. The North Sydney to Port aux Basques crossing scheduled for today at 11:45 pm is now scheduled to depart Friday morning. The Port aux Basques to North Sydney crossing scheduled for this evening is also scheduled to depart Friday at 11:45 am. The crossings scheduled for Friday may also be impacted.
