Heavy snow, strong winds batter Avalon Peninsula as flights cancelled, roads close

Severe weather conditions continue on the Avalon Peninsula of Newfoundland.

Heavy snow and strong winds continue this afternoon over the Avalon Peninsula. The Avalon Peninsula Southeast will see another 10 to 15 cm by this evening with winds gusting between 80 and 100 km/h. For St. John's and the metro area, 15 cm of snow is expected by this evening with winds gusting from 80 to 100 km/h.

Parts of central, northeastern and eastern Newfoundland will get another 5 to 10 cm, and winds will gust to 100 km/h along the coast.

Some roads are closed in St. John's due to severe weather, including Beaumont Hamel Way (from Southlands Boulevard to 218 Danny Drive), Danny Drive (section next to the Trans-Canada Highway only), and Cochrane Pond Road, west of the Back Line. The RNC is also warning those who don’t need to be out to stay inside until conditions improve.

Flights in and out of St. John's are cancelled, and MetroBus and Go Bus are not operating.

There are nearly 1,000 Newfoundland Power customers without power.
