Houses destroyed in Port aux Basques as storm surge inundates town

There is widespread destruction in Port aux Basques, NL.

The town has reported that several houses in Channel, Lemmytown and Charlie’s Head are gone.

Residents are urged to evacuate and go to an emergency centre.

At this time the Town Office is cut off and water is up to the front door and coming in on the back of the building.

Officials are unable to answer the phones.

Storm surge has inundated portions of the town and waves could reach 15 metres.
