Hurricane Isaias strengthening as Gulf Coast braces for landfall

Hurricane Isaias is strengthening over the Gulf of Mexico and is expected to approach the U.S. northern Gulf Coast on Friday before making landfall tonight or early Saturday.
In its 4 a.m. CDT advisory on Friday, October 9, the U.S. National Hurricane Center reports maximum sustained winds of 175 km/h, making Isaias a Category 2 hurricane. The storm is expected to become a major hurricane this morning before weakening slightly ahead of landfall.
Isaias is moving north-northeast at 24 km/h, with a turn toward the north expected later Friday.
Hurricane warnings are in effect from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, to the Bay and Gulf County line in Florida. Tropical storm warnings extend across portions of Louisiana, Mississippi and Florida.
A storm surge warning is in effect from the mouth of the Mississippi River to the Suwannee River in Florida, with a storm surge watch extending east to Yankeetown, Florida.
Storm surge and flooding threats
The National Hurricane Center warns that storm surge could cause life-threatening coastal flooding, particularly where rising water coincides with high tide.
Storm surge of 1 to 2 metres is possible from Dauphin Island, Alabama, to Indian Pass, Florida. Some areas could see water levels reach approximately 1.5 to 2.1 metres above ground.
Rainfall totals of 100 to 200 millimetres are forecast across southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle, the Big Bend region and southwestern Georgia through the weekend. Localized totals could reach 380 millimetres.
The heavy rainfall is expected to cause flash and urban flooding, with significant impacts possible across parts of southern Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and southwestern Georgia. River flooding is also expected, potentially becoming significant in some locations.
Tornado threat and dangerous surf
A tornado risk is expected to develop late Friday afternoon and continue overnight across coastal Alabama, the Florida Panhandle and far southwestern Georgia. The threat is forecast to continue Saturday across parts of eastern Alabama, Florida, Georgia and the Carolinas.
Swells generated by Isaias are also expected to spread northward toward the Gulf Coast, creating dangerous surf and rip current conditions.
The National Hurricane Center urges people in warning areas to complete preparations and follow evacuation instructions from local officials as conditions are expected to deteriorate quickly on Friday.
