A strong earthquake has occurred off the coast of Japan on Friday evening.
The magnitude 6.7 earthquake was centred 49.4 km east-southeast of Ōfunato, Japan, off the Coast of Miyagi Prefecture.
Due to the earthquake, long-period ground motion was reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency, which can cause slow shaking in high-rise buildings even far from the epicentre.
The earthquake occurred at 8:22 p.m. local time and was at a depth of 43 km.
There were no immediate reports of significant damage or injuries following the quake, and there were no tsunami alerts issued as a result.
Japan is one of the world’s most earthquake-prone countries due to its location along the Pacific Ring of Fire.
