A big change in weather is expected to sweep across Newfoundland and Labrador beginning Tuesday, bringing wind, rain and colder conditions.

Newfoundland

On Tuesday, a cloudy and breezy day with heavy rain is forecast, with daytime highs reaching around 9°C and overnight lows near 3°C.

Tuesday evening into Wednesday will bring significantly colder conditions and even stronger winds. Wednesday’s high is expected to drop to around 4°C with overnight lows near -1°C. Morning rain is likely, giving way to clouds and sun in the afternoon, with a chance of a shower in spots.

Rainfall amounts of 30 to 60 mm are expected, and winds will gust to 100 km/h in some areas, except 130 km/h in the Wreckhouse area.

Drivers and outdoor workers should be cautious. The transition to colder air and strong winds means conditions will deteriorate, particularly in exposed regions.

Labrador

Western Labrador will receive 25 to 35 cm of snow this afternoon through Tuesday morning. Freezing rain is expected for Eagle River. Nain and vicinity will see about 15 to 20 cm of snow.

Impacts & advice:

  • Rain on Tuesday could lead to wet roads and reduced visibility in heavier downpours.

  • The sharper drop in temperature on Wednesday means wet surfaces could freeze Tuesday night into Wednesday morning, increasing the risk of icy roads and walkways.

  • Gusty winds may make travel more difficult.

  • Residents should secure loose outdoor items and be prepared for changing conditions.

  • Those planning outdoor activities for Remembrance Day should plan ahead.

Looking ahead: While Thursday is expected to have mainly cloudy skies and a high near 4°C, the main weather disturbance for Tuesday and Wednesday appears to be the most significant in the short term.
