Nine dead as historic winter storm slams the Gulf Coast and Southeast

At least nine people are dead from a historic winter storm that is impacting the Gulf Coast and Southeast.
There are major highway and air traffic disruptions, including road closures and flight cancellations. Given the snow that has fallen, travel impacts may linger for several days. Many of the areas hit do not have snow-clearing equipment.
There are also thousands of power outages. Over 25 thousand are without power in Texas, over 15,000 in Louisiana, 45 thousand in Georgia, and 37,000 in Florida.
Precipitation will continue this morning for the Gulf Coast and Southeast with areas of heavy snow, sleet, and freezing rain expected from northern Florida northeast to the North Carolina Outer Banks.
Most of the United States east of the Rockies are also dealing with dangerously cold wind chills.
