Powerful earthquake kills dozens in the Philippines

A magnitude 7.8 earthquake has hit the Mindanao area of the Philippines.


Officials said that at least 32 people have been killed and over 200 people have been injured. Images show collapsed buildings and people seeking cover.


The earthquake occurred at 7:37 a.m. local time on Monday. It was centred 24.7 km west-southwest of Burias, Philippines and was at a depth of 35 km.


Several aftershocks were also recorded, including a magnitude 6.4.


The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was a threat of a tsunami. The threat has since passed.
