A powerful earthquake has occurred off the coast of Mexico.
The 7.3 magnitude earthquake was centred 48.5 km southwest of Aquiles Serdán, Mexico and occurred at 9:48 a.m. local time at a depth of 15 km.
There were also several aftershocks, including two measuring at 6.0 according to the United States Geological Survey.
There were no immediate reports of any injuries or damage.
The earthquake prompted tsunami concerns. Tsunami waves have been observed, and officials warned that tsunami waves reaching 0.3 to 1 meters above the tide level were possible for some coasts of Guatemala and Mexico. The threat has since passed.
