St. Anthony Route 430, facing West. GovNL

A weather system moving across Newfoundland is poised to deliver a blast of winter weather to the province.

Snow is falling over most of Labrador and portions of western Newfoundland. Snow is mixed with rain in the Stephenville area and we are seeing rain along the southwest coast.

Snow will move across the island today to include central and the Avalon. Along the south coast precipitation will likely remain as rain.

There are snowfall warnings in effect for:

  • Bay of Exploits

  • Bonavista North

  • Churchill Falls and vicinity

  • Churchill Valley

  • Green Bay - White Bay

  • Green Bay - White Bay Newfoundland and Labrador

  • Northern Peninsula East

  • Port Saunders and the Straits

  • Red Bay to L'Anse-au-Clair

For areas in Newfoundland under a snowfall warning, 15 cm is expected. Snowfall amounts for the Red Bay to L'Anse-au-Clair area could be between 15 and 25 cm and for the Churchill Falls area, 20 to 25 cm is expected.

There is also a Wreckhouse wind warning in effect for Channel-Port aux Basques and vicinity. Winds will gust up to 100 km/h in the Wreckhouse area this morning.

Many schools in Central and Western Newfoundland are closed due to the weather.

Marine Atlantic has cancelled crossings for tonight.
