Severe thunderstorms bring heavy rain, strong winds to Saskatchewan and Manitoba

Severe thunderstorms moved through southern Saskatchewan and Manitoba on Sunday, bringing torrential rainfall, strong winds and damaging hail to parts of both provinces.

Environment Canada reported rainfall totals exceeding 50 millimetres in several Saskatchewan locations, including 56.5 millimetres at Last Mountain and 55.8 millimetres at HZNMR.

Other notable rainfall totals included 31.2 millimetres at Val Marie Southeast, 31.5 millimetres at Broadview, 26 millimetres at Regina RCS and 24 millimetres at Regina.

Strong wind gusts were also recorded, including 93 km/h at Val Marie Southeast, 91 km/h at Regina and 89 km/h at Mankota.

The most significant hail report came from Kipling, where hail was reported to be approximately the size of baseballs.

In southern Manitoba, rainfall totals were even higher in some areas.

Environment Canada reported 93.5 millimetres at Portage East, 73.6 millimetres at Stonewall and 65.4 millimetres at Souris for the 24-hour period ending at 8 a.m. Monday.

Other significant totals included 56.8 millimetres at Bagot, 56.7 millimetres at Selkirk, 51.9 millimetres at Woodlands and 46.7 millimetres at St. Lazare.

Volunteer reports to the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail and Snow Network included 104.6 millimetres in the High Bluff area and between 78.5 and 88.9 millimetres in the Portage la Prairie area.

Winnipeg The Forks recorded 62.6 millimetres, while other Environment Canada, meteorological service and Nav Canada stations reported 35 millimetres at Winnipeg A, 30.7 millimetres at Berens River and 29 millimetres at Shoal Lake.

Strong winds were also recorded across Manitoba, particularly from Winnipeg westward. Elie recorded a gust of 87 km/h, while Portage Southport reached 85 km/h. Winnipeg's airport and Brunkild both recorded gusts of 83 km/h.
