The first snowfall of the season is expected to bring significant accumulations to parts of Alberta tonight and through the weekend, potentially affecting holiday travel.

In west-central Alberta, rain will change to snow tonight as temperatures fall. Snow will initially accumulate at higher elevations before becoming more widespread overnight, with totals ranging from 7 to 25 centimetres.

Jasper, Grande Prairie and Valleyview are expected to receive amounts near the lower end of that range because of their lower elevations and protected valley locations.

Further south, snowfall accumulations of 10 to 20 centimetres are expected from Saturday morning through Sunday night in parts of southern Alberta.

Showers will change to snow Saturday morning as temperatures drop. Pincher Creek is expected to receive 5 to 10 centimetres, while Crowsnest Pass and Waterton Lakes National Park could see close to 20 centimetres by Sunday night.

Snowfall is expected to ease Sunday night and end by Monday morning.

Across the province, rain will gradually change to snow tonight in west-central Alberta and on Saturday or Saturday night in many other areas.

By Saturday evening, snow is expected to accumulate across much of central and northern Alberta. Snow will then move south Saturday night, affecting areas south of Calgary on Sunday.

Only light snowfall is currently expected in Calgary and areas to the east, although heavier accumulations remain possible along the southern Alberta foothills and near the U.S. border, including the Cypress Hills.

Snowfall warnings have been issued for areas where accumulations are expected to have more significant impacts. Drivers should prepare for changing road conditions and allow extra time for travel.
