Snow, ice and rain warnings create hazardous travel conditions across northeastern Ontario

There are multiple weather hazards affecting parts of northeastern and northwestern Ontario, with snow, freezing rain and heavy rainfall expected to create dangerous conditions through Friday.

Snowfall warnings remained in effect for areas along the north shore of Lake Superior and parts of northeastern and northwestern Ontario. Total snowfall amounts of 10 to 20 centimetres were expected, with the snow forecast to taper off Friday morning in northwestern regions and by Friday afternoon in northeastern areas. Reduced visibility and difficult travel conditions were anticipated, with the potential for road closures.

Freezing rain was also impacting parts of northeastern Ontario east of Lake Superior. Ice accretion of 3 to 5 millimetres was possible, leading to slippery roads and walkways. There was also a risk of localized power outages due to ice buildup on utility lines. Travel conditions were expected to remain hazardous through the afternoon.

In addition, rainfall warnings were issued for parts of northeastern Ontario, where freezing rain was expected to transition to rain overnight. Rainfall totals of 20 to 30 millimetres were forecast, raising concerns about flooding in low-lying areas and water pooling on roads. The combination of rain and melting snow was expected to increase runoff and worsen localized flooding risks.
