The City of St. Catharines has introduced several support programs for residents affected by heavy rain and flooding between July 21 and Aug. 2.

The city said thousands of residents across St. Catharines were impacted by significant rainfall on July 21, July 27-28 and Aug. 2.

Eligible residents who need help removing water and flood-related waste from their homes can register for assistance through the city's Vulnerable Assistance Registry.

The city is also working with volunteer organizations, including Ontario Corps and Team Rubicon Canada, to provide assistance to residents affected by the flooding. The organizations will arrange appointments for site visits and work and will not arrive at homes unannounced or ask residents for money.

Flood-related waste can also be disposed of at large bins at the Seymour-Hannah Sports and Entertainment Centre and Bill Burgoyne Arena from Aug. 10 to 15, between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. Residents must provide proof of residency.

The city has lifted curbside garbage limits for flood-related waste until Aug. 21. Residents can place flood-related waste at the curb on their regular collection day, even if it is not their regular garbage collection week.

There is no limit on the number of flood-related large items that can be placed at the curb, and residents do not need to book large-item collection for flood-related waste.

Tipping fees have also been waived at the Humberstone Landfill and Bridge Street Waste and Recycling Drop-off Depot until Aug. 22, with a maximum load of one pickup truck or trailer.

Residents experiencing financial hardship following the flooding may also be eligible for Ontario Works or Emergency Assistance through the provincial government. Eligibility requirements apply.

The city is also directing residents to mental health supports, including flood-specific trauma and stabilization services through ATTCH Niagara and counselling services through Pathstone Mental Health.
