Stormy New Year's Day for Southern Ontario #ONstorm

It will be a messy start to the new year across southern Ontario.

An area of low pressure will approach southern Ontario from the south and bring snow, freezing rain, and rain to the region today and tonight.

Freezing rain is expected to begin this afternoon across southern Ontario. A prolonged period of freezing rain is possible for areas from London and Brantford north towards Mount Forest. In those areas freezing rain amounts could reach 5 to 10 mm.

For areas stretching from southern Georgian Bay and northern portions of the Greater Toronto Area east to Ottawa 5 to 10 cm of snow is expected.

The rain will likely remain in southwestern Ontario and as far east as the Niagara Peninsula.

Due to the expected freezing rain, some power outages will be possible depending on the amount of ice accretion.

Travel conditions will also be less than ideal. Roads may be slippery and in areas where snow is forecasted, snow buildup on the roads could make travel difficult.
