Thousands without power in Newfoundland as wind intensifies


Newfoundland Power is reporting that there are 5,558 customers in eastern Newfoundland without power at this hour due to high winds.


The strongest winds are now over the Avalon Peninsula. The next few hours will be quite windy.


The latest observations indicated that winds are gusting to 118 km/h at the St. John's International Airport, Cape Race has gusts to 109 km/h and in Grates Cove, winds are gusting to 122 km/h.


The strong winds are the latest in a series of weather events across the region today. There has been heavy snow, ice pellets, and rain.
