Tropical Depression Likely to Form in Gulf of Mexico as System Strengthens

A developing weather system in the northeastern Gulf of Mexico is showing signs of organization and could become a tropical depression within the next day.

The area of low pressure continues to become better defined, while associated showers and thunderstorms have gradually increased in coverage and intensity.

Those along the northern Gulf Coast, including parts of Florida, Alabama, Mississippi and Louisiana, are being urged to monitor the system's progress. Tropical storm watches or warnings may be required for portions of the region later Sunday if development continues.

In addition to the potential for tropical cyclone formation, the system is expected to bring heavy rainfall to sections of the northern Gulf Coast over the coming days, raising concerns about localized flooding.

An aircraft from the Air Force Reserve is scheduled to investigate the disturbance later Sunday to gather additional data on its structure and strength.
