Tropical Storm Fay weakens southwest of the Azores

Tropical Storm Fay is weakening as it moves south-southeast over the Atlantic slowly, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

As of 9 a.m. GMT Monday, Fay is located about 655 kilometres southwest of the Azores. The storm has maximum sustained winds of 100 km/h, down from earlier strength, with higher gusts.

Fay is moving south-southeast at about 4 km/h. The National Hurricane Center expects the storm to turn toward the southwest and move faster over the next few days.

Further weakening is forecast, and Fay could become a post-tropical cyclone within the next day or two.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to about 130 kilometres from the centre.

There are currently no coastal watches or warnings in effect.
