Tropical Storm Hilary to Threaten U.S. Southwest

Tropical Storm Hilary, which is currently located 755 km south-southeast of Manzanillo, Mexico, could have a significant impact on the U.S. Southwest this weekend and into next week.

Currently, Hilary has maximum sustained winds near 65 km/h with higher gusts. The storm is expected to rapidly strengthen over the next few days and is expected to become a hurricane on Thursday.

Between Sunday and Monday Hilary is expected to transition into a post-tropical cyclone.

Hilary may bring flooding rain and strong winds to parts of California beginning this weekend.

Do Hurricanes Ever Hit California?

Yes, while it is unlikely, there have been impacts from hurricanes before in California. Since 1850, eight tropical cyclones have brought gale-force winds to the southwestern United States.
