Volcano eruption fears in Iceland
The Icelandic Meteorological Office says there could be a volcano eruption and a Civil Protection Alert Phase has been declared due to increasing seismic activity.
The aviation Color Code has been elevated to orange.
In the past 24 hours, there have been over 1,000 earthquakes in the country. The seismic activity currently measured at Sundhnjúkagígar occurs within an area about 3 km northeast of Grindavík.
The shallowest earthquakes measured now are at a depth of about 3-3.5 km.
The signs that can be seen now at Sundhnjúkagígar are similar to those seen on the eve of the first eruption at Fagradalsfjall in 2021.
