What is Meteorological Spring?

Today is March 1 also known as Meteorological Spring. But hold on a minute, spring officially arrives on Sunday, March 20, at 11:33 a.m. EDT in the Northern Hemisphere, so what is Meteorological Spring?

Meteorological Spring all has to do with the temperature. Typically the coldest temperatures occur from December 1 to February 28, this period is known as Meteorological Winter. As of March 1, temperatures will begin to moderate in most areas.

Meteorological Summer begins on June 1 and Meteorological Autumn begins on September 1.

The vernal equinox, or the first day of spring, is when the Sun is exactly above the Equator and day and night are of equal length.
