Winter storm hits central and eastern Newfoundland

A winter storm is bearing down on eastern and central Newfoundland. Snow has started across most of the Island and snow is expected to continue through the day with the exception of the Avalon and Burin Peninsula where snow will change to ice pellets and eventually rain today.


Snowfall amounts of 25 to 40 cm is expected for central, on the Avalon and Burin 15 to 25 cm is expected.


For St. John's and vicinity, Avalon Peninsula North, and Southwest Avalon winds are expected to gust to 140 km/h.


There are a few delayed and cancelled flights at St. John's International Airport. A few flights at Gander International Airport are also cancelled.


Due to strong winds, the Legionnaire will be docked at Portugal Cove until wind conditions improve.


Travel is not recommended from Southern Harbour to Clarenville.


Several schools are either delayed opening or closed this morning including Memorial University, several CNA campuses, and private instututions.
