12 new moons discovered orbiting Jupiter

Jupiter has a reputation for having a lot of moons, but it can add 12 more to its orbit.

The giant gas planet now has 92 moons after 12 more were discovered. Jupiter has the most moons of any planet in our solar system.

These new moons were discovered via telescopes in Hawaii and Chile in 2021 and 2022.

The diameter of the new moons ranges from about a kilometre to 3.2 kilometres.

The largest of the newly discovered moons will receive names later this year.
